Why Is My Skin Dry but Still Breaking Out?

BETTER FIT NOTES | SKIN CONCERNS
Your skin feels dry, tight or flaky. But you're still getting breakouts, often around your chin or jawline.
Treating the blemishes makes the dryness worse. Switching to a richer cream doesn't necessarily stop the breakouts.
You don't have to choose between addressing breakouts and keeping your skin comfortable. Start by identifying which part of your routine isn't working.
The short answer
Dry skin can still develop clogged pores and acne. Harsh cleansing, excessive exfoliation and drying acne treatments can make skin feel even less comfortable. The goal is to cleanse without stripping, maintain enough moisture and address blemishes with appropriate targeted care.
Why is my skin dry but still breaking out?
Dryness and acne are different concerns. Your skin can produce relatively little oil and still develop clogged pores or inflamed blemishes.
Four things can contribute to the combination:
1. Your cleanser is too stripping
If your skin feels tight immediately after washing, your cleanser or cleansing habits may be contributing to dryness. Hot water, scrubbing and harsh cleansing can increase discomfort. Use lukewarm water and choose a cleanser that leaves skin feeling comfortable.
2. Your acne treatments are drying
Benzoyl peroxide, retinoids and exfoliating acids can cause dryness or irritation, particularly when first introduced. Using several strong treatments together can make the problem worse.
Avoid adding multiple new treatments at once. Follow the directions for prescribed acne medications rather than stopping or changing them without professional guidance.
3. Your moisturizer isn't a good fit
Skipping moisturizer can leave dry skin even less comfortable. But a texture that feels excessively heavy may also be difficult to use consistently, especially when you're concerned about clogged pores.
The right moisturizer provides enough moisture while feeling comfortable on your skin.
4. Your skin's needs have changed
Weather, hormonal fluctuations, aging and changes in your skincare routine can affect how dry or reactive your skin feels. Products that worked previously may no longer provide the same level of comfort.
What should you change first?
You don't need to replace every product in your routine. Start with the step that's causing a problem or failing to provide what your skin needs.
THE BETTER FIT METHOD
Keep what works. Change what doesn't.
KEEP — What's still working
Keep your cleanser if washing leaves skin comfortable. Keep your moisturizer if it provides enough moisture without feeling too heavy.
ADD — What's missing
If dryness comes with sensitivity, reactivity and occasional blemishes, add Bee Calm for targeted soothing and moisture-barrier support. Apply after cleansing and before moisturizer.
REPLACE — What no longer fits
If your skin feels tight after cleansing, replace your cleanser with a non-stripping option such as Clean Slate . If your moisturizer is too heavy or no longer keeps skin comfortable, choose a better-fitting texture, such as Hydra Silk when lighter moisture is preferred.
A simple routine for dry, breakout-prone skin
Build your routine around comfortable cleansing, targeted care and enough moisture. You can use products you already own if they're working.
YOUR ROUTINE, STEP BY STEP
01 / CLEANSE
Use a non-stripping cleanser that leaves skin comfortable. In the evening, remove sunscreen, makeup and daily buildup. Very dry skin may only need a lukewarm-water rinse in the morning.
02 / TREAT
Apply Bee Calm after cleansing if your skin needs additional soothing support. If you're using a prescribed acne treatment, follow your clinician's application directions.
03 / MOISTURIZE
Use a moisturizer that provides enough hydration and comfort without feeling excessively heavy. Keep your existing moisturizer if it still works.
04 / PROTECT — MORNING
Finish your morning routine with broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher. Reapply as directed.
Example Pure + Kiwi routine: Clean Slate → Bee Calm → Hydra Silk, followed by SPF in the morning. This illustrates the order of use; you don't need to replace products that already work for your skin.

Frequently asked questions
Can dehydrated skin still break out?
Yes. Dehydration means skin lacks sufficient water, while acne involves processes such as clogged pores and inflammation. Both can happen at the same time. Increasing hydration may improve comfort, but it does not automatically treat acne.
How long should I try a new routine?
Introduce one new product at a time so you can assess how your skin responds. Stop using a new product if it repeatedly causes stinging, itching or irritation. Acne treatments may take several weeks to produce noticeable improvement, so follow their recommended treatment schedules.
When should I see a dermatologist?
Seek professional advice if breakouts are persistent, painful, worsening or causing scarring. Prescription treatment may be necessary, and cosmetic skincare should not replace medical care.
